“When Dionne Phillips booked her first big modeling gig at 19, she had no idea it would lead her to become the first person to bring lash extensions to market.
By cutting up strip lashes and applying them as individuals, Phillips developed the trick to make her polaroids pop, and other models wanted her to work her magic on them as well.
Fast forward to 2005, and D’Lashes, a boutique lash extension salon, was born.
Since its inception, Phillips has “lashed out” some of Hollywood’s hottest A-listers, including Victoria Beckham, Naomi Campbell, Renee Zellweger, and Mary J. Blige, to name a few. Then in 2012, she launched the D’Lashes product line, which includes every product and tool you’ll ever need to get red carpet-ready lashes right at home.
How did you get your start in the beauty industry?
Since I was a kid, I was in beauty pageants. As I got older, I wanted to transition into modeling to become a supermodel. When I was 19 years old, I booked a big modeling job in NYC, and that’s when I got my start in the industry.
To make my polaroids stand out, I started cutting up strip lashes and applying them to myself. Not long after, I had models coming to my kitchen to be lashed out before their auditions. Our polaroids looked so much better and our eyes popped with the lashes.
You are the first person to patent the idea for eyelash extensions, correct? How did that idea come about?
Yes, I was the first person to try to patent the idea of eyelash extensions 20 years ago. However, my attorney at the time informed me that it wasn’t possible because it is a service, and there is no way to trace the origin of a service. That said, I was the first to bring “extended wear lashes” to market, which is now known under the name “eyelash extensions.”

HOW LONG DO LASH EXTENSIONS LAST?
With proper application and gentle cleaning lash extensions can last up to 3-4 weeks with recommended touchups. Make sure to always be gentle with your new lash extensions and use a gentle lash wash. Since your natural lashes shed just like your hair some lash extensions will shed as well. We recommend coming in and getting refills every two to three weeks due to the natural shedding cycle of your natural lashes.
DO LASH EXTENSIONS RUIN YOUR EYELASHES?
Lash extensions do not cause any damage to your natural lashes if applied by a professional certified lash expert. Your lash expert will make sure to help you choose the correct lash extensions with you and the amount of lash extensions that you need so that they are not too heavy. Make sure to take care of your lash extensions, don’t rub them, and do not pull on them or rip them out. Also, make sure you use a very gentle lash wash. Your natural lashes shed just like your hair so it’s normal if your lashes and lash extensions shed here and there. You can come in for a touch-up.
HOW MUCH DO LASH EXTENSIONS COST?
Lash extensions cost can vary from different salons and lash experts. You want to find a certified lash professional and someone that you trust. It’s always better to pay for quality work so that you are happy and don’t have to go to another salon to fix a bad lash extension job and lose that money. The starting point for lash extensions cost is usually around $150 going up to $500.
CAN YOU WEAR MASCARA WITH EYELASH EXTENSIONS?
Since you have new beautiful long lash extensions already we recommend that you don’t use mascara as it can cause clumping. You want to keep your extensions fluffy, soft, and beautiful without the fuss of mascara. The sole purpose of eyelash extensions is to give a great look of mascara without the time and energy it takes to apply mascara. Lash extensions eliminate that process and stay on for several weeks. If you really have to use mascara with your lash extension we recommend using a little bit at the ends of your lashes and then using a very gentle lash wash at night to remove the mascara. Do not use waterproof mascara since it’s harder to wash off and can dislodge your lash extensions and never use oil-based products around your eyes when you have lash extensions. Always be very gentle with your lash extensions.
HOW DO YOU SHOWER WITH EYELASH EXTENSIONS?
We recommend not to wash your lash extensions for 24-48 hours after application. Always ask your lash professional if you can get your lash extensions wet right after application because some adhesive that is used to attach the lash extensions can withstand moisture. Just don’t expose your lash extension to hot water and heat. You can then shower with them and wash your face as long as you don’t use oil-based products and don’t rub your lash extensions. Always be gentle with your lash extensions and use a proper lash wash to clean them. Showering with them is perfectly ok.
